The perfect ending to an amazing trilogy. The beginning was a bit slow, but it picked up quickly and I read the last 2/3 of the book in one sitting. I‘m going to miss this series!

JenReadsAlot @BethM It was! I went to Italy for 2 weeks in September! 1mo
Bookbuyingaddict Oh my goodness @BethM plan a trip ! Take the kids it is an amazing experience. My advice if you go in summer ;take lots of water 💦 to drink as once you in the ancient city (which is huge) there are no shops ! It‘s stunning how well preserved it is. Warning ⚠️ modern Pompeii isn‘t great , it‘s easy to catch the train 🚆 there from sorrento also wonderful. Trains are abit run down but cheap. You will need the whole day or 2/3 days to see it all ☺️ (edited) 1mo

Wow! Didn‘t work on audio for me but reading it blew me away. what a wonderful sweeping saga . It also helps that Iv been to Pompeii 4 times and have visited the brothel seen the stone beds and the murals and the house with the faun fountain (still in tact ) an amazing story really doing justice to what our sisters had to endure 😣and to the legend of Pompeii if you‘ve never been you really must put it on your bucket list it is Atlantis.fantastic

Newitz looks at 4 ancient cities, Çatalhöyük, Pompeii, Angkor, and Cahokia, and examines the details of everyday life in these urban centres, instead of the major events that other historians tend to focus on.

I finished this book yesterday to wrap up the #FabulousFebruary readathon. Thank you for hosting @Andrew65!

On my TBR for yonks and started this evening it has great reviews in the times and im surprised it‘s not more widely read on here. Wish It had been published when I was actually in Pompeii in 2017 ! We did go into the brothel the stone beds were tiny and stone !! Not very comfy and the murals still painted on the walls , so a punter would come in and ask for one of the numbered murals 😖those poor poor women ! Anyway it‘s a slow start, let‘s see

This book really goes into detail about Roman life, the eruption and later the work of archeologists to find and restore this chapter of history.

This was good! It is quite a tough read though. The reality of Pompeij brothel is brutal but I was happy that it wasn't toned down or romanticed. Characters were well written and I loved the description of the women's friendships. I think this book handles the topic of slavery and ownership of one's body really well. The story followed the route we walked through Pompeij last year when we visited there. I remember a lot of the locations.

ReadingRachael This sounds really interesting. I‘ve wanted to visit Pompeii ever since my high school/secondary school Latin teacher brought it to life for us. I ended up taking 3yrs of Latin (grade 11, 12, & 13) and our class followed the story of a family up until the eruption of Vesuvius…so so tragic 😭 3mo
Martta @ReadingRachael You should definitely visit there! I've been there twice and it is just amazing! There is so much to see. Last year we walked there like 7 hours and saw many of the places mentioned in this book. We got to visit many of the villas and the theatre, arena, forum and so on. It is quite a unique experience! 😊 3mo
ReadingRachael That sounds fantastic, it would be so interesting 😊 3mo

Started reading this. It feels quite brutal. I love the location though. I visited Pompeii a little less than a year ago and saw many of the actual locations mentioned in the book.
