MsMelissa No, I‘m not a teacher. My daughter is in grade nine and just finished English - she had a fantastic teacher and loved her course. She read The Hate u Give, so I‘m curious to see what other high school English teachers assign. I‘m very curious to see what books grade 10 English will bring 😊 3y

TheLudicReader Are you in the U.S. @MsMelissa ? I am East Coast Canada. We use The Hate U Give in our classrooms, and a couple other popular choices are Between the Shades of Grey and Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys. My classroom library has about 1500 books and I try to give my students as much personal choice as possible in what they read. 3y

MsMelissa I‘m in Ottawa 😊. I like that you allow students to choose their own reading materials. I never had an issue with assigned reading in high school, loved everything but Shakespeare, but as a general rule I don‘t like others picking out my reading for me (this is why I suck at book clubs 😂). 3y

TheLudicReader This is why I created the course Young Adult Lit. I am lucky to be at a school where the admin and my head of dept understand that students are much more likely to read more when they get a say in what they read. Gone are the days when you studied To Kill a Mockingbird for three months. @MsMelissa 3y

DebbieGrillo I don't assign whole class novels either. This semester my 11th graders will be reading novels in verse. I will group them according to their choice of text. But the bulk of their reading will be independent self selected books. I have a huge classroom library. I teach three 11th grade English classes and one 12th grade class called Growth Goals and Grit. 3y
