The audiobook performer has some odd quirks but the book is really great. Can't wait to finish it.

I‘ve been working in education with refugees for my entire adult career, over 30 years and I don‘t plan on stopping. Thank you, Helen Thorpe, for getting it right, for loving our kids & their families, for seeing them, for listening to their stories, for working to understand, for appreciating why we do what we do. Thank you for bringing our beautiful, brilliant, tenacious, courageous students into the public eye. ❤️

Great book following the students of South HS would are in a beginner level English acquisition class. This book is about the students, their path to the US, what it's like to be a refugee in the US, and how hard it is to learn English (if your native language is very different than English). Inspiring and heartbreaking, it led me to understand that I know NOTHING about how hard life can be.

Oh, America, land of the brave, here is the Syrian refugee of whom you‘ve been so afraid, and he is nothing more than a kid who goes to the library on the weekend so that he can prepare for class.

At one point, I commiserated with Lisbeth about her circumstances, but she did not require pity. Instead she said, with complete acceptance of where she found herself, “Es mi historia.” It is my story.
