Great story! I also literally LOLd at the little intro story in the first part of the collection.

We've come to Durham for a few days' break, which means that the country has had a typical month's-worth of rain in one day! 🌧️☔ Expecting such weather as our usual lot, at least there's lots of indoor things to do.
Books will be bought on this trip, starting with these two that I got from the supermarket charity table ½ mile from my front door when we stopped for takeaway coffee for the journey 🤦‍♂️

The_Book_Ninja I used to bus up to Foyles as a kid and buy Target Dr Who‘s. They used to be so cheap and I devoured them in the holidays. It was the only way to re-live the Pertwee and Baker stories ‘cos, as we know, once it had aired, we never expected to see an episode again. 2mo
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja The introduction to this 2011 reprint says the same thing - in those days, once it had aired, the novelisations were the only way to catch up. (Why am I repeating what you just said? 🤷‍♂️😄) I've never read one of the novelisations, so (when I get to it in my next regeneration) it will be an interesting exercise. 2mo
The_Book_Ninja @Bookwomble I remember missing an episode of Dr Who and I was complaining to my dad and he said “One day soon you‘ll be able to record TV and watch it later” My mind was blown, I just couldn‘t comprehend what he was saying. He must have seen a prototype video recorder on Tomorrows World or something. 2mo

Haven't been reading this weekend. I finally finished these two pieces that I'd promised to the two tagged friends a year and a half ago.

These collected essays from Sandifer‘s Doctor Who blog have each series/season of the show deconstructed with critical reflections of the social & political climate at the time of release on both a personal & wider level. This isn‘t always as dry as it sounds but I did skip a few filler essays. This volume is number 4 but the 2nd I‘ve read (I wasn‘t born during Hartnell/Troughton years so skipped those books). I watch the show as I read the essays

Bookwomble Having been veggie since 1987, about the only thing I miss is Barrett's Jelly Babies. Getting a quarter in a paper bag on the way home from school made the possibility of the Fourth Doctor's appearance in Lancashire seem that much more likely! 🧣 4mo
The_Book_Ninja I‘m vegan…and have a massive sweet tooth. They don‘t do jelly babies but they do some damn fine pick-n-mix. I get a 1kg —yes 1KG!—fizzy and gummy mix…praise the Lord https://thevegancandyman.com/ 4mo

80/150 I love Doctor Who, and I've enjoyed many of his written adventures, but this isn't one of them. Slow and tedious, I thought the author was building atmosphere, but then nothing much happened. The Cybermen never really come off as a scary threat, lumbering along like slow zombies, ultimately defeated by some last second techno babble on the Doctor's part. Also, I felt the story suffered because the Doctor was without a companion. ⬇️

RamsFan1963 No Amy, no Rory, no River Song, not even the usually annoying Clara. Too much time was spent explaining things that one of his companions would have grasped right from the start. I missed the witty banter between the Doctor and his fellow travelers, it made the story one note grim. 2 ⭐⭐ 4mo

This installment features David Tennant in a pre-Doctor role, adding a little bit of extra fun to what are very grave proceedings indeed. The stinger line at the very end was perfect, and overall I liked the pacing and was intrigued by what the Daleks are up to. Looking forward to reading on!

I‘m not sure about the monsters of the week but the writing was so spot on that I could hear the characters in my head ... the Doctor & Jo Grant … even though the narrator was nothing close to them. Good narration, good writing, fun story in multiple times! I love the Master and the spin the author gives to him was something I‘ve wanted to see again. The Master coulda been good. I‘ll listen to this again!!
