This was quite philosophical at times. Does it make sense to save a species that is then unable to live in the wild? Is it fair to that animal? What constitues true conservation? Life at all costs? There are even DNA banks, called frozen zoo's, with samples of over a thousand different species of insects, fish and mammals saved in them. (10,000 individual cells.) To what end remains to be seen. Overall it was a facinating read and I learned a lot.

The Lamar and Hayden Valley areas are known a the American Serengeti. The open plains, the wildlife, the understanding of America as an amazing landscape. If you have seen this, it can be hard to believe that we almost lost it in the late nineteenth century. George Bird Grinnell is one of the men we can thank for saving this precious resource. He recognized that without proper conservation, the American West would be plundered into devastation.

I‘m in a Care For Creation (environmental) group at church and we have committed to each reading one book about the environment each month. This was my January book. It was pretty dated, but I couldn‘t resist hearing what Ted Danson had to say.

My initial book for #Belize didn‘t work out and, quite frankly, I‘m so glad, because I loved this one! It starts as a history of jaguars and humans and how they influenced one another then evolves into the modern science of jaguar study, Rabinowitz‘s area of expertise. Riveting book; he did wonderful work.

This is a fascinating book about the beginnings of the US Forest Service and our relationship with public lands. The scenes that describe the 1910 wildfire in Idaho are fast paced, and the background information about forestry is interesting.

forestandcrow I have wanted to read this as its in the area i live. Love my home because of all the history. 5mo
ChaoticMissAdventures I have seen this floating around the bookstores for years and always thought it sounded interesting! 5mo

Pictured alongside photos from my attempts at making a better landscape for pollinators and fostering a native environment in my own backyard, Wilding is further inspiration to continue my efforts! Finally got around to finishing this #NaturaLitsy read. Though focused on British flora and fauna there are many environments mentioned throughout. Why did I know so little about the turtledove? I hope this movement continues across the globe!

After founding The North Face then Esprit, Doug Tompkins cashed in and went to Chile to dedicate his time to protecting the wilderness. I should have loved this—someone eschewing society to protect the natural world, but it felt too much like an extremely wealthy person throwing their money around for their own ends. Plus he flew everywhere in a small plane while protesting extractive industry. 🤷🏼‍♀️

iread2much It sounds like a rich dude who wants lots of praise for his “sacrifice” and ignores all the ways he could have empowered others… 9mo
Hooked_on_books @iread2much To a degree, yes. He was instrumental in creating a number of national parks in Chile, which is fantastic, but he just threw money at everything, seemed to bulldoze people, and failed to recognize his own complicity in use of fossil fuels. He was also careless in a way that led to his death. Really, it was a hard book to pay attention to. 9mo

I am addicted to this type of bookmark. I clip mine to the back of the book to make it easier to flip the ribbon in or out as needed. This brings my bookjig collection to 5.

Soubhiville I have one I really like too 🙂 9mo
