My #spaceracereading deep dive is progressing more slowly than I hoped, but I‘m still enjoying it immensely. This memoir by Jim Lovell (commander of Apollo 13) was thoroughly informative and compellingly written. I was pleased with how much more I understood about the Perseverance landing because of this book. I‘m looking forward to reading Gene Krantz‘s view of this mission when I get to his memoir.

“Counting on Katherine” is a B/NF , PB that was a Cook Prize winner in 2019. This awesome book emphasizes the importance of a African American woman in 1961. Katherine Johnson calculated the trajectory of NASA‘s first trip into space. This would be an great RA to bring out during space exploration. Teachingbooks.net offfers a link to a lesson plan, students can build their own straw rockets and try to get them to the finish line. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Tabitha_H The UDL principle I would use would be 3.1, Activate or supply background knowledge. Students need to know that women were not treated equally around this time. The ESOL strategy would be #4, link lesson topic to student prior knowledge. 4y
Ryan_R Thank you for showing us this book! It‘s definitely I‘m going to look into. This would also be great for adding diversity to teachers classroom libraries! 4y
ShardaeP Just learned about her when I watched the movie Hidden Figures. It is sad she is just now being recognized for her contributions. 4y
DrSpalding A read aloud of this biographical picture book is a great idea. This is an excellent book to use in your social studies curriculum. 4y
