My 2019 year in review. Lots of five ⭐ books this year.

Made both goals in #MtTBRChallenge2019 and #VirtualMountTBR2019 as well. 24 total.

Read 36 books in all, not my best total, but above average for me. If you are new to following me, I should let you know that I'm a slow reader who doesn't get a lot of time to read. I'll never read 100+ books a year, but I try to make up for that with quality and diversity.

Nothing like an advertisement for videocassettes at the end of the ebook to remind you that the book you are reading predates the medium you are reading it on. #RtC #Overdrive #VirtualMountTBR2019

I enjoyed reading this, but probably should have read it when I was younger and less skeptical. There was a lot of Campbell explaining what he thought was wrong with modern society.

I haven't a single negative thing to say about this book. It was perfectly executed.

Read this one along with my 7th grader, who is about halfway through himself. There is a local organized event centered around this novel, and the library was promoting it last time we were there. It just happened to be on my TBR anyway. We didn't get to attend the festival, but it was fun to read the book anyway.

Challenge Update

I finished the Bergen autobiography, which was my 15th book this year. I use my GR Challenge as a minimum read goal. Meeting it now means I have a decent chance of doubling it!
I'm still plugging away on #MountTBR2019 (7/12) and #VirtualMountTBR2019 (6/12) , and reached my first summit in the former (6 bks).
My oldest kid completed the In&Out Challenge at the library. I love the artwork on the certificate!

If you consider yourself an ally, you most definitely should read books from the minority and/or immigrant perspective, such as this, Homegoing and What is the What. This book tells it like it is, with no sugarcoating.

Ever read something considered classical cannon and feel incredibly grateful that no one forced you to read it in school? That was me yesterday when I finished this. I was so sure I'd like this, but nope. I found the story boring and all the characters unlikeable. It also took me forever to read, as I was easily distracted while reading it. I feel no desire to continue with the trilogy.

Not sure why my library classifies this as YA, as I think it speaks to any age group. This compilation of artwork and prose seeks to break stereotypes of Indigenous women in both the US and Canada, empower them and give them a voice. As someone who tries to be an ally to marginalized groups, It is prudent to listen and hear from them speak from their perspective. There is power and strength in the artwork and poems, especially.
