Difficult to choose my favourite book in #August for #12Booksof2023 as I read the next books in a lot of my favourite series that all got five stars, but going for The Grave Tattoo (a non-series read). This book has everything mystery, intrigue, compassion and a theory for what happened to Fletcher Christian of Mutiny on the Bounty fame. Loved both the past and modern time line and strongly recommend this, which I couldn‘t put down.

In British maritime history of the late 18th century, few events captured the public's imagination more than the Mutiny on the Bounty. There have been at least two films made & these positioned Fletcher Christian as standing up against a cruel Captain (actually Lieutenant on this voyage). The Far Land tells the story of the mutiny on The Bounty as well as an exploration of where the descendants of the mutineers ended up, with the author visiting modern day Pitcairn Island. I found the narrative structure interesting and I think I was more taken in by the modern storyline.

Dual story of the Bounty mutineers & the author's own present-day travel to Pitcairn Island - where Fletcher Christian & the others settled. Uneven - I actually liked the travel story better than the Bounty mutineers. Narrative history is hard to do right, & Presser is a travel author - so maybe not surprising. But any story with “Massacre Day“ as a plot point will hold your interest!

I got my second mystery bundle from Horizon Books today, and while it‘s ok I must admit the first bundle set my expectations pretty high. That was a home run, this is maybe a double. The non-fiction looks much more interesting than the fiction. The tagged book is the second they sent me about pirate-type adventures in the south Pacific, which is pretty unusual.
