The Great Chimera | M. Karagats?s

This little known #classic of #moderngreek #literature from the thirties is a fabulous read. #Love, betrayal, cultural conflict when a young French woman follows her lover, a sea captain to his island home #Syros. The portrayal of the woman draws heavily on #Freud. She is a forerunner to #Durrell's unforgettable #Justine. The lush descriptions also remind me of Durrell. Brilliantly translated. An unusual read

Pickpick

Another of Durrell‘s books about Mediterranean islands. Not as good as the great Prospero‘s Cell, but still interesting with its depiction of 1950s Cyprus politics, which wound up in Zugzwang, to use the chess term, in which all moves were bad. #1950s #Cyprus #Durrell
