Despite finding this a struggle to get into I finished it before sleeping. I was just exhausted and over stimulated and needed to get out of my brain and this did the trick but I like AH adult fiction better, the low spice meter was nice as was the chess talk

Impulse shopping at Book Outlet got me, I didn‘t realize this was YA. The full family responsibility on the 18 yr old, casual sex hook ups because feelings are too much work and putting up with toxic sibling behaviour is not engaging me

Chess Story | Stefan Zweig

My first Zweig and I wasn‘t disappointed. I enjoyed the two narrators (one narrator relates a story including a story related to him by the second narrator). It‘s a story of the horrors of war and the methods of torture and the impact of near madness told through the lens of a chess game.

The first AH book I haven‘t loved, but I did like it. It feels more New Adult than Young Adult, I think, which wasn‘t my favorite. Mallory felt VERY young, which I guess makes sense, as she‘s a young woman forced very early into an adult role, and throughout the book she deals with the consequences of that. It was fine, but one of the few I don‘t see myself rereading. It was fun to read this while kiddo and hubby played endless rounds of chess.

Before I started this one, I realized it was a reread and that I had read it before and posted about it on Litsy. (I can't recall the year offhand but I think it was before I bought my house). Initially, I could not understand why I gave this the review I had, but as I worked my way through this novella, it became more clear. Still a good read and glad I found this on my shelf to revisit. (Pictured here with my next read)

A quick read owing to the fast paced nature of the book. You can't but help root for Beth Harmon.
I have been holding off watching the TV show until I read this book so onto the series next!
