Hail to the Chief
Hail to the Chief: An 87th Precinct Mystery | Ed McBain
1 post | 3 read
Even after 13 years in the 87th Precinct, Bert Kling and Steve Carella had never seen such murders--six naked bodies, including an infant, and no one knows who any of them are. Then an anonymous phone call leads Kling and Carella to a private street war. Now the two veteran cops just might get caught in the crossfire of organized violence in the city's darkest corners.

Once again, McBain plays with form as the detective work carried out by our heroes is interspersed with a comprehensive confession that fills in many of the gaps. These two narrative threads run side by side sometimes switching off from paragraph to paragraph with no indication of the change in POV. I can't think of many modern novelists who could pull this off so seamlessly and keep things moving forwards. Its utterly cinematic. Bravo.
