Little Woman in Blue: A Novel of May Alcott
Little Woman in Blue: A Novel of May Alcott | Jeannine Atkins
4 posts | 2 read | 10 to read
May Alcott spends her days sewing blue shirts for Union soldiers, but she dreams of painting a masterpiece which many say is impossible for a woman and of finding love, too. When she reads her sister s wildly popular novel, "Little Women," she is stung by Louisa s portrayal of her as Amy, the youngest of four sisters who trades her desire to succeed as an artist for the joys of hearth and home. Determined to prove her talent, May makes plans to move far from Massachusetts and make a life for herself with room for both watercolors and a wedding dress. Can she succeed? And if she does, what price will she have to pay? Based on May Alcott s letters and diaries, as well as memoirs written by her neighbors, "Little Woman in Blue" puts May at the center of the story she might have told about sisterhood and rivalry in an extraordinary family."

Conversations between characters in this historical fiction often felt factual instead of natural. Also, probably best appreciated by art history fans and/or fans of anything to do with Little Women. It also shows how difficult it was to be both a woman and an artist. May also died young before realizing her full potential 😢. Obsessed w/ reading more about the Alcotts and taking a trip to Concord, MA! 👆(detail) by Rose Peckham is of May Alcott.

LeahBergen And now I need this one! 😂 7y
ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen all your recs look fantastic. Thank you! I think of these three I'd want to read American Bloomsbury first , so that I'd appreciate the visit to Concord even more! 7y
LeahBergen @ValerieAndBooks It's a really quick and easy overview of all the greats from that area and would be perfect (I actually bought it in Concord and read it while I toured around there 😀) 7y
ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen good to know! So when were you there? It's not far from where my son goes to college in Boston but not easy to add an extra day of sightseeing when we're there. But hopefully it'll happen in 2017 😊 7y
LeahBergen I think it was about 5 yrs ago? I went with a friend for a little tour around the state and we did Concord, Amherst, Salem and other places. I loved it! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen that's great! We got to visit Salem for the day last spring 😊 7y

Just finished this. And see the date in the author's note at the end? 😱 😢 137 years ago today if my math is right. I will try to do a review tomorrow. (Note: there's a typo on this page for May's married last name, Nieriker).

Reviewsbylola I love when that happens! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Reviewsbylola I agree! I can't remember the last time something like that happened in my reading, though. 7y

My gosh, I have barely been on Litsy or reading these past few days! It's great having everyone home but it's keeping me busy, especially since we are having to share cars. This (from my parents) is the only book I got on Xmas Day. I'm halfway thru. Historical fiction; POV is by May Alcott, youngest sister of LM Alcott, and May's desire to be an artist yet struggles w/ social mores and familial demands, and of being a woman artist in general.
