North Sun: Or, The Voyage of the Whaleship Esther | Ethan Rutherford
2 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
From one of our great artists of catastrophe (Laura van den Berg) comes North Sun, or the Voyage of the Whaleship Estheran allegory of extraction and a tale of adventure and endurance during the waning days of the American whaling industry. Setting out from New Bedford in 1878, the crew of the Esther is confident the sea will be theirs: in addition to cruising the Pacific for whale, they intend to hunt the teeming northern grounds before the ice closes. But as they sail to their final destination in the Chukchi Sea, where their captain Arnold Lovejoy has an urgent directive of his own to attend to, their encounters with the natural world become more brutal, harrowing, ghostly, and strange. With one foot firmly planted in the traditional sea-voyage narrative, and another in a blazing mythos of its own, this debut novel looks unsparingly at the cost of environmental exploitation and predation, and in doing so feverishly sings not only of the past, but to the present and future as well.

A genre-defying book…. Part whaling story / maritime adventure, part body horror, part dark fantasy, part polemic on the dangers of capitalism.

I certainly can‘t say I enjoyed it but I appreciated it and was compelled to keep reading, despite the very graphic depictions of whale slaughter.

There‘s a lot to process here and I‘ll be thinking about it for some time.

Another one from the NBA longlist and from my #10beforetheend list.

Hooked_on_books I loved that this book didn‘t go where I was expecting it to go. I found it so absorbing. 3w

I‘ve read and enjoyed books that take place on whaling ships before, but this one is really different. It starts largely as one might expect, but as it moves forward, there are fantasy elements I wasn‘t expecting and a sprinkling of horror as well. Parts of t the book are rather dreamlike There is some graphic animal death and dismemberment here, so be prepared for that.
