From #1 bestselling author Genevieve Graham comes a gripping novel set in Toronto and Vietnam during the turbulent sixties about two women caught up in powerful social movements and the tragedy that will bring them together--perfect for fans of Kristin Hannah's The Women. Toronto, 1967. Two young women with different backgrounds, attitudes, and aptitudes are living in an exciting but confusing time, the most extreme counter-culture movement the modern world has ever seen. They have little in common except for the place they both call home: an apartment building on Isabella Street. Marion Hart, a psychiatrist working in Toronto's foremost mental institution, is fighting deinstitutionalization--the closing of major institutions in favour of community-based centres--because she believes it could one day cause major homelessness. When Daniel Neumann, a veteran with a debilitating wound, is admitted to the mental institution, Marion will learn through him that there is so much more to life than what she is living. Sassy Rankin, a budding folk singer and carefree hippy from a privileged family, joins protests over the Vietnam War and is devastated that her brother chose to join the US Marines. At the same time, she must deal with the truth that her comfortable life is financed by her father, a real estate magnate bent on gentrifying the city, making it unaffordable for many of her friends. The strength of their unlikely friendship means that when one grapples with a catastrophic event, the other must do all she can to make it right. Inspired by the unfettered optimism and crushing disillusionment of the sixties, On Isabella Street is an extraordinary novel about the enduring bonds of friendship and family and the devastating cost of war.

Definitely a fiction book with some unbelievable parts but it was a great book. It is well researched and written. It is a story about two woman finding themselves. It is about the treatment of Veterans and their mental health. It is about de-institutionalization in the 60s and some of the repercussions. While it doesn't dive deeply into the topics it brings attention to them with a good fictional story to go with it. Glad I picked this one up!

A dangerous game to be drinking a dragonfruit tea at this hour!! But I'm wide awake now to get through a chunk of this book. I really enjoyed part one (although I did find one of the characters dialogue slightly annoying). Hoping part two is just as good.

If I'm posting a review at 2 AM you know what happened 🤣 . Work will be full of regrets tomorrow!

An absolutely gorgeous day here, even if it's only 10 degrees. It's a bit cloudy but so bright and crisp out - I love this weather!! Going to start the tagged book with my Ice Cap. I believe this book looks at the mental health side of Veterans through a fictional story - so I'm hoping to learn a bit from this book.

This author always manages to both entertain and educate me, which is the reason I enjoy historical fiction. This book deals with Vietnam vets in Canada and the effect deinstitutionalizing those with mental health issues had on vets suffering from PTSD. Set in Toronto and Vietnam, the story includes romance and an unlikely female friendship, where both women experience a ‘coming of age‘. I really enjoyed it. Thank to NetGalley for the ARC. 4.25/5

Jess861 I'm so excited for this book to come out! 8mo
