SS-GB
SS-GB | Len Deighton
What if WWII went the other way? In this alternative-history novel, Deighton imagines a chilling world where British Command surrendered to the Nazis in 1941, Churchill has been shot, the King is in the dungeon, and the SS are in Whitehall. In occupied Britain, Scotland Yard conducts business as usual...only under the command of the SS. Detective Inspector Archer is assigned to what he believes is a routine murder case--until SS Standartenfuhrer Huth arrives from Berlin with orders from Himmler himself to supervise the investigation. Soon, Archer finds himself caught in a high level, action-packed espionage battle. This is a spy story different from any other--one that only Deighton, with his flair for historical research and his narrative genius, could have written.

This may have been written a long time ago (1978) but it stands the test of time well. This is a really good mystery/suspense/thriller book that is based on the concept of Germany winning the Second World War and occupying the U.K. I always enjoy Len Deighton books and this is no different. It holds back a few shocks/surprises for the end of the book.

Mehso-so

(Yay audiobooks 😏) Decent one this, much more an espionage thriller than the murder mystery it initially suggests. Felt it dropped off in the final third when the claustrophobic political intrigue gave way to more just 'action'. Weird to say that my favourite character was the SS guy (Huth) - loved his caustic humour. Although this book felt a mixed bag, at least I'm now motivated to seek out Deighton's more famous titles (e.g. The Ipcress File).

Recent purchase ~ SS-GB by Len Deighton (Kindle edition📱). I watched the first episode of the television adaptation last week and I enjoyed it, so I am planning on reading the book.

morag-at-large The TV adaptation differs from the book quite a bit in ways that I like; I think they are setting things up for a sequel. (edited) 2y
Weave @morag-at-large I've still to read the book📚 I agree, the tv adaptation did finish with the potential of a second series.📖 2y

Finished the first 6 chapters and not quite sure what to make of it yet. It's an interesting premise though.

Our choice for Thriller of the Month is the incredible alternative history thriller SS-GB. It's 1941 and after a successful invasion by Germany, the U.K. is conquered; a simple looking murder catches the attention of high up SS officers and soon embroils Douglas Archer in something much bigger than himself. This is not to be missed.
