More Than a Cold War Photographer:
More Than a Cold War Photographer:: 30 Years on the NATO Front Line | Michael Keenan
1 post
A biographical account of a 30 year journey with the Royal Air Force. Entering the RAF as an apprentice Air Photographer and later specialising as an Air Camera Fitter. It is the story of the waning years of photographic reconnaissance and my experience with a variety of Fighter, Ground attack, maritime, tactical and strategic reconnaissance systems and aircraft including flying with the Army Air Corps. The developing technology of digital cameras, radar imaging and Infra red systems would see the demise of the wet film cameras. It would also result in re-training to the Air Radar Trade and work with the Royal Navy on the Canberra Electronic Warfare training aircraft, training with the NATO AEW force for the role of Airborne Technician in preparation for the delivery of the Sentry AEW aircraft to the RAF. This later resulted in being selected to become a Flight Trials Evaluator at MOD Boscombe Down and later as a civilian on leaving the RAF. A very odd career to say the least, from 5 Sqn Lightnings with cine cameras to 5 Sqn Sentinel aircraft with an Imaging radar.
