A moody, atmospheric literary thriller and a timeless tale of migration (The Guardian), from one of Europes biggest-selling authors Despite its Biblical titlewhich comes from the opening lines of the Book of Exodusaward-winning novelist Tommy Wieringa has crafted perhaps his most timely book yet, as he traces two stories doomed to collide. In one, we follow a group of starving, near-feral Eurasian refugees on a harrowing quest for survival; in the other, we follow Pontus Beg, a policeman from a small border town on the steppe, as he investigates the death of a rabbi, one of the towns two remaining Jews. What follows is a gripping saga in which the two stories race toward each other, and Beg will be shaken to his core by what each one reveals about mans dark nature, and the possibilityor impossibilityof his own redemption. A virtual parable for our times, These Are the Names offers a suspenseful reading of a crisis that continues to dominate headlines, and simultaneously explores the enduring questions of faith, identity, and what it means to be home.

This is an odd but satisfying Dutch novel that follows two alternating story lines that converge toward one another. In one, a policeman investigates a murder while exploring his identity & Jewish heritage. The other follows a group of migrants on the Russian steppes traveling toward the Eastern European town where the officer lives. A timely look at migration, home, belonging, & humanity with Biblical overtones from the Book of Exodus. ✡️

And now for something completely different: a Dutch novel that explores faith, religion, and migration. Don't fail me, book. I've read a couple of not-so-great books this week and could really use a change of pace! You can't tell too well from the Kindle version, but the cover art really is quite stunning. 📖

shawnmooney Curious to hear your thoughts on it – I'm planning to read it sometime this year. 7y

A recent JBC #bookcoveroftheweek, Tommy Wieringa's Libris Prize-winning novel balances the mundane and the mysterious between two seemingly inharmonious stories without ever striking a discordant note. #JewLit
