The Ballad of Mary Paul's on and Other Sonnets
The Ballad of Mary Paul's on and Other Sonnets | TS S. Fulk
2 posts | 1 read
These sonnets are fun pieces in the not so serious vein of the Cthulhu mythos portrayed in games like Arkham Horror and tales in Lovecraftiana and Dark Horse Magazine. The first twelve sonnets comprise the series The Ballad of Mary Paulson. Mary was an outsider in her hometown. However, once in college, she made friends and started developing herself as a Wiccan. When one of her friends is being used by a worshiper of Shub-Nigggurath to open a portal for the dark elder god, it is up to Mary to try to save the day. The remaining poems are isolated Lovecraftian sonnets.

I really liked this passage from "Solving the P‘naptuk Paradox":

"Hear his mutterings
as they echo through time
like Noah‘s turtledoves
or a crushed butterfly
sending wavelets through time
embrittling your shackles"

These type of sonets aren't usually my cup of tea, I'm a bit old-fashioned when it comes to poetry and I'm also not very fond of Wicca, so maybe I'm really not the best person to review this. BUT! As a Cthulhu fan, I found them to be nice sonnets, and I especially enjoyed the last one, “We Ghouls“, which is a bit more down my alley. The first one, “Invisibility“ I found to be very sweet and very relatable.
