Dead Souls
Dead Souls: An Inspector Rebus Novel | Ian Rankin
4 posts | 9 read | 1 to read
Weary, wary, hard-drinking Detective John Rebus returns in author Ian Rankin's internationally acclaimed, award-winning series. As complex and unpredictable as the brooding mists that envelop his Edinburgh beat, Rebus is ever resourceful and determined--but this time, vulnerable and challenged as never before, with complications in his personal life, and events that shake him to the depths of his being.... A colleague's suicide. Pedophiles. A missing child. A serial killer. You never know your luck, muses Rebus. Driven by instinct and experience, he searches for connections, against official skepticism. But at night, unsoothed by whiskey, Rebus faces his ghosts--and the prospect of his daughter's possibly permanent paralysis. Soldiering through dank, desperate slums and the tony flats of the Scottish chic, Rebus uncovers a chain of crime, deceit, and hidden sins--knowing it's himself he's really trying to save.... Ian Rankin's Dead Souls is "crime writing of the highest order" (Daily Express).

I‘m sure I started this longer ago than January, and it‘s taken me this long to finish it. I ended up liking this one even though it seemed too long. Rebus being Rebus, he seems bent on self destruction. Missing person, nostalgia, threats, murder, personal drama, loose ends. And, of course, Scotland is its own character. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed this installment of the Inspector Rebus series. There was a lot I liked:: several complex intertwined subplots, controversial and disturbing social issues to mull over, and a look into Rebus's teenage years.

I finished only one book for the #20in4 readathon but I did get a start on a couple of others and ended with a total of 11 h and 20 m. Many thanks to @Andrew65 for hosting!

The tenth book in the Rebus series picks up from the end of the previous book.

Rebus is faced with a moral dilemma of dealing with a freed pedophile

And at the same time he is trying to keep an eye on a serial killer that returned to town

And a son of a friend of his is missing

Three cases for rebus to play with and takes us on a your of Edinbrughs underbelly

Enjoyable
Noir
Dark
Criminal
And loving all at once
