panYou absolutely need to read the first series to understand this book. It says you don't but you do. The author spends no time familiarising a new reader with the world, there are references to events in the previous series, and it's really confusing to read without context.

The other thing that stuck with me is one of the MCs is described as having ‘Asian features‘ … what does that even mean? His daughter is also described as having ‘Asian features‘
It didn't sit well with me.
