If you don‘t know how to move the story forward, just kill off a character. If your protagonist is completely unable to grieve or show much in the way of emotion, great, it won‘t bog the story down in sentimentality. Of course, it also won‘t feel genuine. The solutions were farfetched and there was no suspense as the murderer just as well have been wearing a giant M on his shirt from the first.

3.5⭐
Despite having everything a good YA mystery needs, this still failed to pull me in. I mean, I was there…but I wasn‘t there, there. It was probably just a case of it‘s not you, it‘s me. Even the narration by McKenzie Fetters was decent…so I‘m still not sure what it was. So I'm going to say it was a light Pick.

I really enjoyed this YA thriller— my first experience with this talented author! Stevens brings all of her characters to life here. Vivid writing, with a consistent check-in with the aromas of the novel, a great dog and a thrilling plot made this one hard to put down even while preparing to host Thanksgiving! Lucy, a girl who has weathered one tragedy finds herself in the midst of another—& soon discovers the two may be connected. A page-turner!
