After a disease ravages his underground community, Winter escapes with his daughters, Violin and Candlestick, to the upper world-a dangerous place called Earth. Winter fears what he will find there, but the planet is largely abandoned. With no understanding of how humans live, Winter must make sense of his surroundings while keeping his family alive. As Winter struggles through this dark, horrific journey, he weaves wild, zany tales to entertain and teach his daughters. Celebrities as demi-gods, Abe Lincoln the ice giant, and a host of other mythologies, keep Winter and his children going as the real world gets darker and scarier. Dangerous human survivors are hunting them, terrifying creatures are around every corner, and a deadly infection is spreading through Winter's blood. Time is running out, and he needs to find a safe place for his children to live. Will Winter keep his family alive long enough to finish his tales?
