I was drawn to this cover in the lovely ink@84 indie bookshop in London. It was newly published so there were no reviews, but I decided to take the risk, mainly because it‘s set in 1980s Yorkshire.
This was a compelling read, looking at a family as the father descends into depression, when such things weren‘t spoken about. However, much as I liked it, the narrative style is really unusual, hence showing the extract in the photo, as it takes ⬇️.
squirrelbrain ⬆️ some getting used to. It‘s kind of stop-start stream of consciousness. Look particularly at the ‘it‘s‘ in the middle of sentences. If this page confuses / annoys you then don‘t read the book! Once I got the hang of it I could hear it in my head. 2y
squirrelbrain These sections were interspersed with the youngest son looking back on his childhood, which I loved. Who remembers the Blue Peter competition to fit as many items as you could into a matchbox, or picking the ‘best thing‘ of each page of the Argos catalogue, or when a Wall‘s Viennetta was the height of sophistication?! Just me then?! You had to have grown up in the 1980s in the UK though! 2y
TrishB C buys a viennetta when she‘s upset! She used to have all her house mates eating them at uni. I remember all the other things too 😁 2y

Centique Oh yes viennetta! I must see if they‘re still around - that was such a treat. For me it was late 90s though, I don‘t think we had them in NZ until then. 2y
LeeRHarry Viennetta - dessert of choice in our house in the 80s! 😋 2y
