"She realized there was peace right here in the midst of this heavenly sort of place, despite the unpredictable storm churning around her family." For generations, Ellie Hostetler's family has tended their Lancaster County orchard, a tradition her twin brother, Evan, will someday continue. Yet when Evan's draft number is called up in the lottery for the Vietnam War, the family is shocked to learn he has not sought conscientious objector status, despite their Old Order Amish belief in non-resistance. The faraway war that has caused so much turmoil and grief among their Englisher neighbors threatens too close to home. As Evan departs for boot camp, Ellie confides her disappointment to Sol Bontrager, the brother of her best friend and cousin to her new beau, Menno. In contrast to Evan, Sol is a conscientious objector. Despite Ellie's attraction to Menno, she finds herself drawn to Sol's steady presence as they work together in the orchard. Suddenly, it feels as if everything in Ellie's world is shifting, and the plans she held so dear seem increasingly uncertain. Can she and her family find the courage to face a future unlike any they could have imagined?

Mehso-so

I live in the Amish belt and know the stance on war is clear but I hadn't ever considered the draft playing into it. There was a section of a character who conscientiously objected the war/draft and was then stoned & attacked for doing so by complete strangers further emphasizes the hate to those not willing to serve. That was eye opening but even more so was that they never called the police or took him to a hospital but rather,...

MaggieCarr ...cleaned him up and monitored his healing at home. Is that really how it would have played out? I'm not so sure, the Amish around me go to the same doctors the rest of us do, and use traditional medicine. Maybe that is something that has changed since Vietnam? I'm not so sure. 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures I have an easier time believing they didn't take him to the hospital if they were very conservative than I do wrapping my head around him being stoned? I was even trying to figure out when the last person was stoned in the US and wasn't able to figure it out. 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures My dad's mother loves these books, this lady and a lady named Janette Oake! 2w
MaggieCarr Yes, both authors are community favorites at our library but I don't see the appeal. The male MC was walking along the road and some "English" pulled over and beat him with rocks before leaving him with a busted hand and arm, and a concussion and ear trauma that led to deafness in that ear all because he didn't sign up to serve. Meanwhile the Amish boy that did sign up to serve is spoken poorly of among some of the Amish before returning home. ? 2w
