3 posts | 3 read
A thrilling fantasy series about a twelve year old girl who sets out to save her Shinto goddess motherand the worldby facing down demons intent on bringing chaos. A grand adventure. Brandon Mull, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Fablehaven A wild ride of a novelhilarious. Sayantani DasGupta, New York Times bestselling author of The Kingdom Beyond All Momo wants for her twelfth birthday is an ordinary lifelike everyone else's. At home, she has to take care of her absentminded widowed mother. At school, kids ridicule her for mixing up reality with the magical stories her mother used to tell her. But then Momos mother falls gravely ill, and a death hag straight out of those childhood stories attacks Momo at the mall, where shes rescued by a talking fox . . . and ordinary goes out the window. It turns out that Momo's mother is a banished Shinto goddess who used to protect a long-forgotten passageway to Yomia.k.a. the land of the dead. That passageway is now under attack, and countless evil spirits threaten to escape and wreak havoc across the earth. Joined by Niko the fox and Dannyher former best friend turned popular jerk, whom she never planned to speak to again, much less save the world withMomo must embrace her (definitely not "ordinary") identity as half human, half goddess to unlock her divine powers, save her mothers life, and force the demons back to Yomi.

Mehso-so

Misa Sugiura‘s fantasy novel for readers aged 9+ (the first in a series) showcases Japanese mythology and has strong themes of popularity, bullying, loneliness and assimilation with visual imagery that reminded me of Studio Ghibli films. However, emotionally the story didn‘t ring true for me - I never understood why Danny wanted to help Momo and her relationship with her mum didn‘t convince while the plot beats are too heavily structured for me.

Mehso-so

A good start to an interesting younger middle grade series steeped in Japanese mythology. Lots of adventure & great background information. Things a bit heavy for a middle grade read. However, I did appreciate the inclusion of some difficult topics in the story, including peer pressure & bullying. There is a LOT packed into this read. A good start and I'm interested to see where this journey might go. I will be continuing the series.

Pickpick

NGL, I think the execution for this book could have been better. The pacing was a little faster than I'd like but it's still a 4⭐ read! I love the adventures they go on, learning a bit about Yomi and other Japanese myths and creatures, and I thought that the "friendship" dynamic was very interesting #middlegrade #fantasy
