Feed Them Silence | Lee Mandelo

Lee Mandelo dives into the minds of wolves in Feed Them Silence, a novella of the near future. What does it mean to "be-in-kind" with a nonhuman animal? Or in Dr. Sean Kell-Luddons case, to be in-kind with one of the last remaining wild wolves? Using a neurological interface to translate her animal subjects perception through her own mind, Sean intends to chase both her scientific curiosity and her secret, lifelong desire to experience the intimacy and freedom of wolfishness. To see the world through animal eyes; smell the forest, thick with olfactory messages; even taste the blood and viscera of a fresh kill. And, above all, to feel the belonging of the pack. Seans tireless research gives her a chance to fulfill that dream, but pursuing it has a terrible cost. Her obsession with work endangers her fraying relationship with her wife. Her research methods threaten her mind and body. And the attention of her VC funders could destroy her subject, the beautiful wild wolf whose mental world shes invading. I‘m so glad I saw @Chelsea.Poole ‘s review of this and comp to Our Wives Under the Sea. I loved that one and loved this, too. Both books beautifully develop a disquiet and tension as their characters move through a unique situation. Here, we follow Sean as she researches wolves in a deeply connected way, her passion moving steadily into obsession. I can‘t wait to read more from this author.

Reminded me so much of Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield. This is the story of an unhappy marriage and a troubled scientist in the near future whose work with wolves crosses more than one boundary. Ethical animal issues take center stage in this dark and thought provoking read.

3.9⭐️ wow… And that‘s not like the story blew my mind, but more of a, that‘s just so sad. It‘s not how I expected the story ending, and I think if I would‘ve known, I probably would‘ve never put up the book. However, I‘m glad I did those some of the imagery may haunt me for a while.

This TOR sci-fi novella is lush and absorbing enough that it felt like a full length novel.

Dr Sean Kell-Luddon is heading an experimental program in which an implant in her brain can sync with an implant in a wild wolf‘s brain, allowing her to experience the wolf‘s emotions and share events in her life. The goal of the project is conservation- by revealing what struggles wild wolves face can the general public be persuaded to protect nature?

Soubhiville I really loved this, it‘s gritty and while sci-fi it feels like technology we could be striving towards. 8mo
