The Storyteller's Death
The Storyteller's Death: A Novel | Ann Dávila Cardinal
6 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
"Ann Dávila Cardinal writes with the razored clarity of a surgeon, the spare and evocative beauty of a poet, and the immensely compelling passion of a natural born storyteller." —Andre Dubus III, New York Times bestselling author of House of Sand and Fog From International Latino Book Award-winning author Ann Dávila Cardinal comes a gorgeously written family saga about a Puerto Rican teenager who finds herself gifted (or cursed?) with a strange ability. There was always an old woman dying in the back room of her family's house when Isla was a child... Isla Larsen Sanchez's life begins to unravel when her father passes away. Instead of being comforted at home in New Jersey, her mother starts leaving her in Puerto Rico with her grandmother and great-aunt each summer like a piece of forgotten luggage. When Isla turns eighteen, her grandmother, a great storyteller, dies. It is then that Isla discovers she has a gift passed down through her family's cuentistas. The tales of dead family storytellers are brought back to life, replaying themselves over and over in front of her. At first, Isla is enchanted by this connection to the Sanchez cuentistas. But when Isla has a vision of an old murder mystery, she realizes that if she can't solve it to make the loop end, these seemingly harmless stories could cost Isla her life.

Pickpick

The story follows Isla from about age 8 through adulthood as she spends her summers in Puerto Rico with extended family and school years with her alcoholic mother in New Jersey. This was a long narrative of generational trauma and familial secrets. I enjoyed the ending and all of its revelations. Book #68 in 2025 âï¸âï¸âï¸âï¸

Pickpick

This novel took place in Puerto Rico. It was an interesting look at what was described as visions of life events of dead storytellers. The characters were different. I liked Isla Larsen Sanchez, the main character. The tale begins when Isla was a child and takes us through her summers on the island. 4/5 âï¸

Mehso-so

Unfortunately, this book sucked all my reading mojo from me this week. It really shouldn‘t have taken as long as it did to read, but I would just constantly put it down. The premise was interesting- young girl coming of age unravels long held family secrets…. It just didn‘t flow for me. I‘m curious as to what the book group will say about it this week. #ispybingo: cursive font

Panpan

A story of love, loss, and heavily centered on generational trauma and family secrets. It was a very interesting premise but the pacing was really off and made the story feel choppy, which didn't match the whole fact that storytelling is a major plot point. I did enjoy the way the author brought up colorism, racism, and how younger generations tend to have to break family cycles. All in all 3.5/5.
