I wanted a light palate cleanser after some of my last reads, and came across this one browsing the library. My first time reading this author, and overall it fit the bill, though I was more interested in the first half than the second half, as the conflict could have been resolved much quicker. Maybe I actually only needed half a palate cleanser. A light pick.

Another enchanting entry in the Windham series. I love the characters so much. Burrowes writes such entertaining people. You have to cheer on the H/h and love to hate the bad guy. I enjoyed seeing Valentine come to a better, deeper relationship with the Duke of Moreland, as well. Lots of warm fuzzies in this one. I just have one quibble with Burrowes writing, which I‘ll put under a spoiler comment, if anyone is curious.

DGRachel Quibble: I‘ve never read an author, romance or otherwise, who seems so hung up on discussing the heroine‘s “courses”. This has come up in every book in this series so far. I don‘t like to discuss my period with my Gyn or my mother, I really don‘t want to read about someone else‘s, and whose period starts on Thursday and is over by Sunday? I‘d KILL for a cycle that short!!😒 6y
robinb So glad you liked it...I loved Valentine as well! Interesting, I had never thought about how often she brings up the heroine‘s “courses”, but thinking back, you‘re right! Because I remember thinking how sympathetic the heroes always were to those monthly visits...and just how did the guys keep up with all that...wait...now it seems a little creepy...😳😳🤨😧 6y

robinb 😂 I remember thinking at the time that modern men (at least the ones I know) are not that comfortable discussing this stuff with the ladies...were they really that open and casual about it back then?! 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
robinb Wouldn‘t it be nice to have husbands who were that understanding about our mood swings at “that time of the month”? 😂 (edited) 6y

DGRachel @robinb I would settle for a husband, period. Even if he wasn‘t super understanding of that time. I seem to be the pre-wife (the girl they spend years with, dump, and then marry the next one that comes along). I‘ve completely given up dating and am working on resigning myself to my spinsterhood. 😔 6y
robinb @DGRachel I know! Burrowes‘ heroes must have been very enlightened gentlemen...true princes of men! I think if I had been those heroines and a man started discussing my monthly so matter-of-factly, I would have slapped a restraining order on him. 🤣🤣🤣 6y

The series is growing on me despite still (all of them) being the worst sort of wallpaper historical with a wobbly-at-best plot.

Doesn't matter; I loved this story, mostly because I really liked the heroine's down to earth personality...and the hero's heart of gold, though once again the problem keeping the lovers apart is too overcome-able too easily (and also patently obvious).
