In the Memorial Room
In the Memorial Room: A Novel | Janet Frame
1 post | 3 read | 1 to read
Harry Gill, a moderately successful writer of historical fiction, has been awarded the annual Watercress-Armstrong Fellowship—a ‘living memorial’ to the poet, Margaret Rose Hurndell. He arrives in the small French village of Menton, where Hurndell once lived and worked, to write. But the Memorial Room is not suitable—it has no electricity or water. Hurndell never wrote here, though it is expected of Harry. Janet Frame’s previously unpublished novel draws on her own experiences in Menton, France as a Katherine Mansfield Fellow. It is a wonderful social satire, a send-up of the cult of the dead author, and—in the best tradition of Frame—a fascinating exploration of the complexity and the beauty of language.

Harry Gill ,a historical fiction author of modest fame from New Zealand is awarded a fellowship to work in Menton , France. The memorial room that belonged to the writer the fellowship is named after, is not suited for daily writing, no power or water. The expat community who knew the old poet spend Harry‘s time with teas , memories of the writer, or pushing their apartments on him as “the spot “ for him to live. Will he ever get any work done?

vivastory I watched Angel at My Table years ago but still remember it vividly. I need to read some of her books, it's been awhile 3y
Leftcoastzen @vivastory I saw the film quite recently. It‘s kind of surprising that my interest in Jane Campion as a filmmaker & movies about authors in general that I hadn‘t seen it sooner.😀1st thing I watched after signing up with Criterion Channel.People have remarked that her work is dark , but this one is pretty upbeat , great description of the sights & the world of writers & those who congregate around them. vivastory Yeah, this one sounds a bit different from what I've heard about her other books. Definitely intrigued. Are you enjoying your Criterion membership? I've been seriously contemplating subscribing 3y
