Patch Work: A Life Amongst Clothes | Claire Wilcox
3 posts | 1 read | 5 to read
WINNER OF THE 2021 PEN ACKERLEY PRIZE 'A strange and mesmerising piece of work' Sunday Times 'An absolute masterpiece' Laura Cumming 'An uncommon delight' Observer Claire Wilcox has been a curator of fashion at the Victoria and Albert Museum for most of her working life. In Patch Work, she turns her curator's eye to the fabric of life itself, tugging at the threads of memory: a cardigan worn by a child, a tin button box, the draping of a curtain, a pair of cycling shorts, a roll of lace, a pin hidden in a seam. Through these intimate and compelling close-ups, we see how the stories and the secrets of clothes measure out the passage of time, our gains and losses, and the way we use them to unravel and write our histories. Mehso-so

An oblique collection of small micro essays that tell fragments of the authors life story through clothes. As the Senior Curator for Fashion at the V&A Wilcox clearly has a deep connection to clothes, to fabric, to cultural histories and to fashions. Where this book worked best for me is where the clothes are central stage - she writes memorably with passion and conviction. Where the clothes are more accidental to the story my interest wained.

iread2much I love the V&A IG account! This book would be fun to read with the photos 2y
Mitch @iread2much did you watch the Behind the Scenes series?? I loved it - I‘m another life I think I‘d love to work in an archive of objects 👍🏼 2y
iread2much @Mitch I tried to watch it, but it wasn‘t available on any of my streaming services. It looks wonderful! 2y
Mitch @iread2much that‘s a shame. I think you‘d love it. 😞 2y

The last book I read was filled with unexpected trauma & violence. So I need of a palate cleanser! A book the life and memories of the Senior Curator of Fashion at the V&A told through clothes seems just right !

#bookhaul - not the most engaging covers but three gems!
The tagged book is written by the curator of fashion at the V&A and she‘s told her memoir via her attachment to specific items of clothes. 👍🏼

Deblovestoread Loved The Soul of an Octopus. Hope you do too. The others look interesting 😊 2y
Mitch @Kdgordon88 it kinda just jumped out at me in the bookshop - so 🤞🏼! 2y
Hooked_on_books I love the name of the bookshop! It sounds like it should be a shop in a book of magical realism. 2y
