Bad Actors | Mick Herron
5 posts | 7 read | 1 to read
Mick Herron, “the le Carré of the future” (BBC), expands his world of bad spies with an even shadier cast of characters: the politicians, lobbyists, and misinformation agents pulling the levers of government policy. “Confirms Mick Herron as the best spy novelist now working.” —NPR's Fresh Air Soon to be an Apple TV+ series starring Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas. In London's MI5 headquarters a scandal is brewing that could disgrace the entire intelligence community. The Downing Street superforecaster—a specialist who advises the Prime Minister's office on how policy is likely to be received by the electorate—has disappeared without a trace. Claude Whelan, who was once head of MI5, has been tasked with tracking her down. But the trail leads him straight back to Regent's Park itself, with First Desk Diana Taverner as chief suspect. Has Taverner overplayed her hand at last? Meanwhile, her Russian counterpart, Moscow intelligence's First Desk, has cheekily showed up in London and shaken off his escort. Are the two unfortunate events connected? Over at Slough House, where Jackson Lamb presides over some of MI5's most embittered demoted agents, the slow horses are doing what they do best, and adding a little bit of chaos to an already unstable situation . . . There are bad actors everywhere, and they usually get their comeuppance before the credits roll. But politics is a dirty business, and in a world where lying, cheating and backstabbing are the norm, sometimes the good guys can find themselves outgunned.

I absolutely love love love the Slough House books, each one gets better. Never thought I would find myself rooting for Diana Taverner but there are more nefarious characters than Lady Di in the most recent outing for the Park and Slough House. As usual Mick Herron's writing of The Rod'ster, and Shirley Dander are laugh out loud, as are the quips Jackson Lamb throws out. Louisa is still my favorite, but you do have to support the entire crew.

... one of Lamb's crew... shipped off to the Service's drying out facility the morning after Sophie de Greer disappears. The morning after de Greer makes a phone call to Jackson Lamb. It was a matter of patterns; he saw them where others noticed only random particle motion. And here was one. That incident in Wimbledon - Shirley Dander attacking a tourist coach with an iron was too outlandish to be anything other than a cover story.

The 8th in Mick Herron‘s SLOUGH HOUSE SERIES uses a missing person case to incorporate a savage commentary on UK politics. Like SLOUGH HOUSE there‘s a strong set-up feel with Herron manoeuvring characters and motivation for Book 9 but Wheelan‘s return, Taverner‘s tribulations and Shirley‘s rage issues are all a lot of fun, I enjoyed seeing John Bachelor from the novellas and there are some hilarious lines such that I can‘t wait for Book 9.

EadieB This is a political story about lying, cheating and backstabbing. The book has fun-loving characters with dialogue of great wit and humor. The captivating plot is very believable. The twists at the end kept the pages turning. I have read 5 other Herron books and have enjoyed them all. His writing is entertaining. I would like to thank SoHo Crime and NetGalley for an audio copy for an honest opinion. Loved the narrator too! 2y
