Sewing Happiness: A Year of Simple Projects for Living Well
Sewing Happiness: A Year of Simple Projects for Living Well | Sanae Ishida
3 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
Twenty simple sewing projects are tied together with a thread of memoir that tells the story of how sewing brought Sanae Ishida profound happiness. Each seasonal project, specially designed to promote health, creativity, relationships and more, provides gentle inspiration to live your best life. When Ishida was diagnosed with a chronic illness and lost her corporate job, she thought her life was over. But these challenges ended up being the best thing that ever happened to her because they forced her to take stock of her life and focus on the important things, and enabled her to rediscover sewing--her true passion. Inspired to succeed at just one thing, Ishida vowed to sew all of her daughter's clothes (and most of her own) for one year. "Sewing Happiness" includes 20 projects plus variations (including Japanese-inspired home goods and children s and women s clothing) organized by season, and stitched together with Ishida s charming personal story."

I borrowed this almost three weeks ago and kinda forgot about it until I got one of those, “Hey! Your book‘s due back in two days!” emails. So I hunkered down and read it this afternoon, with dumplings.

It was good overall, but I‘m disappointed none of the project instructions are included. I assume you can access them on a website linked to within the ebook, but my screen just went blank when I tapped the “Get Instructions” text. Annoying.

cathysaid Sorry...there was a book? Too distracted by dumplings ❤️ 4y
xicanti @cathysaid they were seriously good dumplings! 4y
TK421 Those dumplings look fantastic! I now have to find good dumplings somewhere close to me tomorrow. No other lunch will do. 😄 4y
xicanti @TK421 they‘re surprisingly good frozen ones. I tried them when they were on sale a couple weeks back and liked them so much I paid full price for my next bag. 4y

Crafting books are my happy place. Any other sewers out there? I'm a newbie, but enjoying learning!

Eridau I'm a quilter but no clothes sewing for me. 😁. I love all the great fabrics that are available nowadays. 7y
emily_jkn I love sewing and books, but for some reason have never really gotten much out of sewing reference books. Maybe I am too stubborn lol? 7y
Karen_V @Eridau I want to try quilting! There are some amazing patterns out there. Gotta graduate from napkins & tote bags first 😉 7y
Karen_V @emily_jkn Your sewing is so pretty, you don't need them! I like looking at books for ideas & inspiration, since everything is still so new to me. I haven't looked at any reference books, but might check one out about fabric types, because I know nothing. 7y
Eridau @Karen_V if you can sew a tote bag, you can do a quilt. It just sewing small pieces into bigger pieces and then sewing those all together. Just start with a small mini quilt or baby size before moving on to the larger more complicated patterns. 😊 (edited) 7y

Pickpick

Part memoir, part sewing book - the author reminds readers of the importance of slowing down and creating things for personal fulfillment. The projects look simple and beautiful, and seem appropriate for beginners. I borrowed this book from the library, but liked it enough that I will probably buy my own copy.

LauraBrook This sounds like right book, right time for me. I've never sewn anything in my life, though - is it that beginner-y? 8y
AmandaL @LauraBrook She goes over needed tools and terms, and has drawings that show many of the steps. It looks easy-ish. The author encourages learning by not being afraid to make mistakes. I've sewn 1 thing ever (and poorly) and I definitely want to try several of the projects. 8y
LauraBrook @AmandaL Thanks for letting me know - adding it to my Amazon wish list right now! 8y
