From the #1 internationally bestselling author of The Butterfly House, called brazen and original by The Toronto Star, comes a timely, suspenseful, and darkly original new novel about a missing child and the web of lies that has threatened his lifeand may prevent him from ever being found. When fifteen-year-old Oscar Dreyer-Hoff disappears, the police assume hes simply a runawaya typically overlooked middle child doing what teenagers do all around the world. But his frantic family is certain that something terrible has happened. After all, what runaway would leave behind a note that reads: He looked around and saw the knife that had stabbed Basil Hallward. He had cleaned it many times, till there was no stain left upon it. It was bright and glistened. As it had killed the painter, so it would kill the painters work, and all that that meant. It would kill the past, and when that was dead, he would be free. Its not much to go on but its all that detectives Jeppe Krner and Anette Werner have. And with every passing hour, as the odds of finding a missing person grow dimmer, it will have to be enough.

The third of Ms Engberg‘s mysteries, and each is better than the last. Jeppe Kørner and Anette Werner have been assigned what is an apparent kidnapping. As the case unfolds, the truth is darker and more twisted than they can imagine. The author allows the story to unspool slowly, and we‘re not sure exactly what‘s going on until the end. The pacing is very well done. Jeppe and Anette face personal challenges as well. Can‘t wait for the next!

The third book in the series and it‘s a slow starter. Korner and Werner are back on the case of a missing teen. Secrets, environmental issues, murder(s), lies, dysfunctional families, betrayal. Korner‘s and Werner‘s personal issues interweave with their investigations. This is a good mystery that took a dark turn. Not a happy book, but an interesting read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is the 3rd book in the Korner and Werner series which is set in Copenhagen Denmark. Fifteen-year-old Oscar Dreyer-Hoff disappears. The police think it is a typical runaway case but his family fear the worst as Oscar left a peculiar note. I found the reference quote to Oscar Wilde's Picture of Dorian Gray interesting. Detectives Jeppe Kørner and Anette Werner uncover lots of secret happenings which keep the pages turning.

EadieB Jeppe and Anette also have to deal with their personal relationships which sometimes interferes with their investigations. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. If you like fast-paced thrillers then I am sure you will enjoy this series. I would like to thank NetGalley and Gallery/Scott Press for a copy of the ebook for an honest review. 2y

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 The word I would use for this police procedural mystery is “basic.” It‘s basically good. Basically quick. It‘s basically effective and plot-driven. Copenhagen. 15-year old Oscar is missing, & everyone is asking, “Did he run away?” Or did something nefarious happen? Enter Jeppe Korner and Anette Werner, the duo of detectives who swim through family secrets, hidden notes, clandestine messages, and Some really dead bodies. ScrappyMags.com

Mehso-so

A boy goes missing and his parents find a strange note. Was he kidnapped? Did he run away? Everyone has a theory of course. Honestly, I wanted more of a thrill from this thriller. The writing was ok, the characters recognizable (not a bad thing in of itself, they just didn‘t stand out), and the solution to the case handled rather neatly. In the end, I didn‘t like nearly as much as I thought I would.

The third book in this awesome mystery series. For fans of dark procedurals. If you‘re not familiar, start with The Tenant.
