Checkmate in Berlin
Checkmate in Berlin: The First Battle of the Cold War | Giles Milton
4 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
The end of World War Two saw an intense and deeply personal struggle for mastery of the Western world amidst the ruins of Berlin. In this thrilling account, bestselling historian Giles Milton recounts epic four-year drama that would culminate in The Berlin Airlift. It is the story of the ultimate game of roulette amongst the enigmatic larger-than-life personalities from rival powers: Britain, the United States, France and the Soviet Union. Drawing on previously unknown oral and written testimonies, Checkmate in Berlin tells - as never before - a story of flawed individuals each determined to win and the first battle of the Cold War.

(2021) This is the story of Berlin, from the end of WWII through the Soviet blockade. I've been aware of this history in vague outline since high school, but Milton puts flesh on it and makes it easy to appreciate what an amazing impossible project of engineering and logistics the Berlin Airlift really was. This is the kind of popular narrative history I love: Candice Millard and Erik Larsen territory. Recommended.

Twilight arrived early in the Crimean Mountains, with dusk falling at four thirty and darkness shortly after.

Finished this book for August #BookSpin tonight, unfortunately a day late. It looks at how the Cold War began.
If you are interested in history, you should read it. It does get bogged down in places, are at least it did for me.

Thanks to Goodreads, Henry Holt Books and Giles Milton for a copy of the book.
