Seventeen-year-old Mandy, who dyes her hair black and hates almost everyone, is not like her mother, the tall, sparkly alien superheo Starfire, so when someone from Starfire's past arrives, Mandy must make a choice about who she is and if she should risk everything to save her mom.

Definitely covers some classic teen moments, first romance, figuring out the future after high school, dealing with bullies/shitty people, even having a parent you feel in the shadow of isn't limited to the offspring of superheroes. It might be Tamaki's writing or just Mandy's no bullshit character, but this felt fresh to me, open about the things that suck while allowing change and a heartwarming ending that was not schmaltzy. 1/2

Robotswithpersonality 2/2 Extra points for making Starfire's polyamorous nature and Mandy's resultant unconfirmed other parent an accepted fact but not a big deal, to the extent that those who ask are deemed rude rather than shaming Starfire. A needed change compared to past narratives around single moms/unknown fathers.
Also: everyone should have a friend like Linc, and the art is amazing.

Fun coming of age graphic novel featuring the queer daughter of Titan‘s legend Starfire. Mandy doesn‘t have powers like her mom, doesn‘t want to go to college, is very sensitive to people using her to get info on her mom, and has a solid best friend Linc. Great character progression, with a nice and neat conclusion…. Or near conclusion. People never finish evolving, right?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What if Teen Titan Starfire had a daughter? And she‘s the polar opposite of her gorgeous, alien, superhero mom? Mandy is just a normal earthling; an awkward high schooler tired of living in her famous mom‘s shadow. Like SUPER fed up with it. Until one day, she‘s not. This is a fun, thoughtful “what if” story with amazing artwork and diverse characters. I guess diehard Starfire fans are not into this take, but whatever, it‘s a good story.
