At Home in the World: Stories and Essential Teachings from a Monk's Life | Thich Nhat Hanh
4 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
This collection of autobiographical and teaching stories from peace activist and Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh is thought provoking, inspiring, and enjoyable to read. Collected here for the first time, these stories span the authors life. There are stories from Thich Nhat Hanhs childhood and the traditions of rural Vietnam. There are stories from his years as a teenaged novice, as a young teacher and writer in war torn Vietnam, and of his travels around the world to teach mindfulness, make pilgrimages to sacred sites, and influence world leaders. The tradition of Zen teaching stories goes back at least to the time of the Buddha. Like the Buddha, Thich Nhat Hanh uses storytelling to engage peoples interest so he can share important teachings, insights, and life lessons. From the Hardcover edition.

Update: this book was amazing! It brought tears at times. So many great teachings!

I love the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh
I am only a few chapters in on this one and it amazing! His way of giving lessons is endearing. His story shows his strength.
Anyone else read his works? This will be the first book of his I have read. I've listened to him for a little while now.

What's your favorite book of his?

Nute The Novice was really good. And the book he wrote about the power of silence. 3y
AloraGrey @Nute Ohhhh! Adding that to my TBR list!! Thank you! 3y
Nute I hope that you enjoy them.😊 I‘ll check back one day to catch your comments. Oh...I am so curious about your Litsy handle “AloraGrey”...it‘s reminding me of something that I can‘t quite place. Book character? Movie character? Or maybe just a cool vibe that I like! I do like it! It‘s really cool! 3y

AloraGrey @Nute Alora is Hebrew for Light of God and it came to me in a dream. Grey is because I like to live in balance of light and dark. Moon is because my ancestors last name was Munn (sounds like moon). When they came here they pronounced it differently. But I liked the Moon sound 🙂. And who doesn't like the beautiful full moon too right? So I use Alora Grey Moon as my alias 😊 3y
Nute Oh my goodness, YOU ARE MY NEW BESTIE based on that reply! I love it! Everything about it! Simply beautiful! I‘m so happy to meet you today, Ms. Agora Grey Moon!😊🌙💕 3y
AloraGrey @Nute awwww thank you! So happy to meet you too 🙂🙂🙂 3y
AloraGrey @Nute I was looking at your profile and you are absolutely stunning 😊 3y
Nute Thank you! I am looking forward to our future acquaintance. Litsy does that sometimes, you know? Grows a friendship from a common bonding over the enjoyment of literature. I‘d say that we‘re off on a rollicking good start!!!😃 3y
AloraGrey @Nute Absolutely ❤️ 3y
Nute This Sunday morning has been so much fun with you! 3y

I read this book in one day and when I closed the book, I realized I will be reading this again and again. So much to sit with and I imagine that each time I read it, I will glean more and more insights from it.

I took a deep breath. Simply savoring that plate of fresh herbs was enough to restore my balance.

Got this one from #netgalley hoping to find a gift for my yoga instructor. The description sounded great, part memoir, part mindfulness instruction. In trying to be both, it sort of misses the mark for either. Some interesting bits, but disjointed. His other, less autobiographical work is better IMO.
