My Grandmother's Braid
My Grandmother's Braid | Alina Bronsky
4 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
Sharp and tender at once, a humourous take on family dysfunction and human weakness seen through a young boys eyes. Max lives with his grandparents in a residential home for refugees in Germany. When his grandmothera terrifying, stubborn matriarch and a former Russian primadonnamoved them from the Motherland, it was in search of a better life. But she is not at all pleased with how things are run in Germany. His grandmother has been telling Max that he is an incompetent, clueless weakling since he was a child. While he may be dolt in his grandmother's eyes, Max is bright enough to notice that his stoic and taciturn grandfather has fallen hopelessly in love with their neighbour, Nina. When a child is born to Nina that is the spitting image of Maxs grandfather, things come to a hilarious if dramatic head. Everybody will have to learn to defend themselves from Maxs all-powerful grandmother.

Pickpick

My friend Shawn ( @shawnmooney ) read this entire book aloud to me over Voxer. He chuckled as he read & I chuckled as I listened. It‘s about a dysfunctional Russian family in Germany, told from the POV of Max, who grows from childhood into his teens under the pathologically overprotective watch of his grandmother, who is a horrible person. And yet Alina Bronsky treats the grandmother with subtle compassion, allowing the chance for empathy.

“Sometimes I think my mother is married to your grandmother,” Vera whispered in my ear.
“No, they hate each other,” I said, as if that would rule out marriage.

Mehso-so

The narrator of this book is a young child, Max(i), who has recently moved with his grandparents into refugee housing in Germany. His grandmother used a distant family connection that was Jewish to get out of the crumbling USSR (but she makes it clear that she is anti-semitic...despite the fact that Max's father is Jewish, their neighbors are Jewish, etc.) ↘️

ReadingEnvy The other important element is that the Grandmother treats Max like an invalid without any potential to learn. This isn't true and the way she talks about him came across as mean instead of the funny I think the author is going for. It was like she used every word except the "R" word but in the same derogatory way. Yikes! And then when the grandfather gets a crush on the neighbor, the shenanigans begin.
