pickThis autobiography is a fun read, taking in his childhood in post-war Manchester, first steps in showbiz thanks to the legendary Bernard Manning's Embassy Club. ('They've no use for poets here lad, half of them can't fucking read'.) and sudden success with the coming of punk in 1977.
Full of great one-liners: "I have often been compared to Bob Dylan - 'Compared to Bob Dylan you're not very good.' Hilarious.
pickThis is a great read, and as witty as you'd expect. John Cooper Clarke has had quite the life, and he tells his story with the dry humour and razor sharp turn of phrase that he's known for. At times he's a bit 'of his time', as you might expect from someone who started out at Bernard Manning's Embassy Club. He's both brutally honest and generous in his praise. Very enjoyable. And it's his birthday today, which is a nice coincidence.
