The Warring States Conundrum
The Warring States Conundrum | Grufferman
1 post | 1 read
When Winston Sage, MD, moved to artsy Santa Fe to enjoy a peaceful retirement, he never imagined he¿d get ensnared in a search for a missing woman that would almost get him killed and would change his life. A neighbor enlists Sage, an epidemiologist, to help find his wife who had disappeared mysteriously. She was a dealer in ancient ceramics of the Chinese Warring States Era and was mentored in this esoteric field by a nuclear scientist at nearby Los Alamos National Laboratory. Sage and his oddball buddies embark on an amateur investigation that leads him to suspect a connection between the wife¿s disappearance and her Los Alamos mentor. His inept search soon attracts the attention of the FBI and the Peoples Republic of China. After Sage survives an attempt on his life by a Chinese agent, he¿s taken into protective custody by the FBI and used as bait to uncover the long sought-after Chinese mole at Los Alamos. The surprising ending leaves Sage disillusioned by the ruthless cynicism of the two modern warring states -- China and the US.
