pickEVERYONE who is in education should read this, & people who deal with people in healthcare should too. This book was really fascinating, I loved the breakdown of the research & the progression of the authors approach. This book documents the physical and mental work and cost that people who must fight stereotype threat must do. It starts with higher Ed but goes into health, business, k-12 and back to colleges. 5/5 stars, read this!
I relate to the need to disprove disparaging preconceived biases about myself because of the arbitrary circumstances of my birth. Part of my identity is shaped around that. I‘ve refused to drop classes, held in questions (especially about math), and pretended I was comfortable with shit I wasn‘t. Above all, I almost never talk about any of it because I don‘t like to think about it, and I don‘t want to look like I‘m easy to offend.
I work at a university and I teach students, staff, and faculty about things like the relationship between identity and our implicit biases. The more foundational stuff I can read, the better, especially when it's backed up by solid research!
