Sammy's had a bad week - his wallet's gone, along with his new shoes, he's been arrested then beaten up by the police and thrown out on the street - and he's just gone blind. He remembers a row with his girlfriend, but she seems to have disappeared. Things aren't looking too good for Sammy and his problems have hardly begun

Pickpick

A book which I read many years ago and still have fond memories of. A story of Sammy, an alcoholic and flawed human being who wakes up in a prison cell, beaten and blind in a drunk tank after a weekend bender. The story is told from the viewpoint of Sammy in a thick Glasgow brogue, but it is worth persevering as Sammy seeks to negotiate his way through the disaster that his life has become.

ReadingEnvy The language in it is so amazing. 8y
Oblomov26 @ReadingEnvy I agree it was given to me by a friend who could not cope with the language, but I found it understandable and in fact quite lovely once you got into it 8y

This book had such an impact on me. The voice is unique and reading it was very similar to the slow but rich enjoyment of Feersum Enjin, only in Scottish dialect. Now there is a new book , Dirt Roads, I think, about a Scottish father and son wandering through the American South, on my to read list!
