Darcy Comes to Rosings
Darcy Comes to Rosings: A Pride and Prejudice Regency Variation | Andrea David
3 posts | 2 read
Elizabeth Bennet from Jane Austens Pride and Prejudice is enjoying a visit with her newly married best friend in the idyllic countryside of Kent. Her pleasant holiday is interrupted when the arrogant Mr. Darcy appears at nearby Rosings Park. During their frequent meetings, her spirited retorts do nothing to deter his attentions to her. In fact, they only seem to encourage him. Realizing Darcy is in love with her, Elizabeth is torn by an awful dilemma. With her fathers estate entailed on a male heir, she and her sisters face the prospect of poverty if they do not marry well. Darcys wealth could save them. But how can she marry a man she does not esteem simply for the material comfort he can offer? Fitzwilliam Darcy is determined to forget the lovely Elizabeth, who stole his heart during his autumn sojourn in Hertfordshire. So naturally, when he learns she is spending the spring within walking distance of his aunt's estate at Rosings, he goes for an extended stay. He finds Elizabeth even more enchanting than he remembered. When Darcy discovers Elizabeths rightful resentments against him, he seeks to make things right and court her properly. Can he convince her of his worth? Or have his past sinsand the machinations of an old enemysunk him in her opinion forever? This Pride and Prejudice variation is a full-length, sweet Regency romance. It includes kissing and a fade-to-black wedding night scene.

Sometimes it feels like an author has an idea for a P&P variation but it isn't enough of an idea to make a whole story, so she just kind of slaps on a second story to make it longer. Here, the first half of this book was pretty good. During Elizabeth's visit to the Collinses, Darcy and Elizabeth have more opportunities for conversations before Darcy's proposal. Charlotte is more vocal in her support of Darcy and helps Elizabeth see some things ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) from Darcy's perspective. But in the second half, after D&E are engaged, Elizabeth suddenly goes from being self-confident and saucy to being constantly on the verge of #hysterics about whether or not she's “good enough“ to be Mrs. Darcy. It was so repetitive and boring and didn't fit with the characters established in the first half at all. It was a shame, because the book started so strongly.

CrowCAH Hmm I see what you mean. Yeah, some ideas are much better suited to a vignette or short story. They don‘t carry enough conflict to make a full story. 2y
mabell It drives me crazy when a consistently strong character all of a sudden becomes wishy-washy, and unsure of herself! (The same thing happened in the Murder She Baked series) To have a character act so “out of character” makes it difficult to follow the flow of the rest of the story. Nice job fitting in hysterics! 2y

Pickpick

A soft pick. The first half was quite good - basically, Darcy & Elizabeth have more opportunities to talk through their differences before the Hunsford proposal, which means that they both can grow as people & see where they each were wrong about various things. However, after they get engaged the book really began to drag. Elizabeth spends all of her time worrying that she isn't good/rich enough for Darcy & has to be constantly reassured by ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Darcy & everyone else that he's madly in love with her. It was kind of repetitive & also didn't feel like it fit with Elizabeth's character at all. Not bad reading, but the second half could have been greatly edited & it would have made this whole book better. Still a fun read if you enjoy P&P variations. 3y
CindyMyLifeIsLit Yes, I don‘t believe Lizzie would spend a moment feeling inferior to Darcy! She made it clear in the original story that wealth and class are two very different things, and while she‘s lacking in one area, she more than makes up for it in the other. She always saw him as her social equal, and now they are soulmates, as well. His proposal is his assurance that he agrees, and she would move on from there and not waste time with doubts. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @CindyMyLifeIsLit - It felt especially weird because even this author's version of Elizabeth wasn't that way for the first half of the book. It just seemed like the author wanted to create some tension/angst so she just kept having E go around & around the same doubts instead of having some more actual story. 3y
