A breathtaking YA novel set in Zimbabwe about freedom, inter-generational friendships and forgiving the past. Tumi desperately wants to make the Zimbabwean national swimming team. Only in swimming does he escape the hatred and exclusion that his albinism brings him. But when he has to stay with his grandmother for a while, the trauma of the terrible thing that happened to him in the past comes rushing back. Can Ambuya help Tumi by revealing her own shocking past - a story riddled with racial hatred in war-torn Rhodesia, featuring murder and an illegal love? And what of Tumi's suspicions that she was involved in his nightmare? From the author of HOPE IS OUR ONLY WING.

By the end of The Colours That Blind, I was pleasantly surprised. The story had got much better than I expected, and I‘m glad that I did carry on. The book is especially relevant during this time, when I think that we should be making as big of an effort as possible to educate ourselves on matters like the racism that is dealt with in it. I never knew anything about the history of Zimbabwe, and now I‘ve definitely learnt and understand a lot more

“The Colours That Blind” tells an important story through the eyes of a young albino boy and his grandmother. I enjoyed the plot, but for me, the dual timelines and terminology meant that I couldn‘t enjoy this as much as I had wanted to. This was a 2 star read for me.

Tumi is an albino and struggling for acceptance at school and in life in general.
He tried to get on the swim team to try and become more popular but then he has to leave before the trials and stay with his grandma.
But something happened last time he stayed with her and in his mind he blames her for what happened.
But then his grandma opens up about her life by reliving her past and she has been living with guilt and demons herself.
