The Strange World of Willie Seabrook
The Strange World of Willie Seabrook | Marjorie Muir Worthington
3 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
Literary Nonfiction. This is an intimate, stunning look at the torturous relationship of two writers: Marjorie Worthington and William Seabrook. A renowned writer on the exotic and the occult, Seabrook was an extraordinary figure from the 1920s to the 1940s who traveled widely and introduced the concept of the "zombie" to Americans. In 1966, years after his death from suicide, Worthington, his second wife, cast her eye on their years together and the erosion of their relationship. Seabrook was a sadist, yet to Worthington he was also enthralling; he was an alcoholic, but she believed she could protect him. In brilliantly depicted moments of folie ? deux, we watch Worthington join Seabrook in his decline, and witness the shared claustrophobic, psychological breakdown that ensues.

I had tried with all my resources to help him, and when I failed to lift him out of hell I slid down the embankment with him.

As I read this, Lana Del Rey responded to the flak she gets for portraying herself in a “sometimes submissive or passive role” in relationships. Her words resonate with this challenging, sad memoir. Worthington never reached the level of fame Seabrook did, and often sacrificed her writing to nurture his. This is uncomfortable. But there must be room, as Del Rey writes, for the “authentic, delicate” narrative.

Willie‘s truth was something special to him. People called it exaggeration when they were being kind. When they weren‘t being kind they accused him of lying. In this they were wrong. Willie almost always told the truth: HIS truth.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Well, this sounds completely bizarre. Stacked! 4y
