Dark Night: A True Batman Story
Dark Night: A True Batman Story | Paul Dini
16 posts | 22 read | 11 to read
This is a Batman story like no other-the harrowing and eloquent autobiographical tale of writer Paul Dinis courageous struggle to overcome a desperate situation. The Caped Crusader has been the all-abiding icon of justice and authority for generations. But in this surprising original graphic novel, we see Batman in a new light-as the savior who helps a discouraged man recover from a brutal attack that left him unable to face the world. In the 1990s, legendary writer Paul Dini had a flourishing career writing the hugely popular BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES and TINY TOON ADVENTURES. Walking home one evening, he was jumped and viciously beaten within an inch of his life. His recovery process was arduous, hampered by the imagined antics of the villains he was writing for television including the Joker, Harley Quinn and the Penguin. But despite how bleak his circumstances were, or perhaps because of it, Dini also always imagined the Batman at his side, chivvying him along during his darkest moments. A gripping graphic memoir of one writers traumatic experience and his deep connection with his creative material, DARK NIGHT: A TRUE BATMAN STORY is an original graphic novel that will resonate profoundly with fans. Art by the incredible and talented Eduardo Risso (100 BULLETS, TRANSMETROPOLITAN).

This is a true story about Paul Dini, a departure from his usual style of story telling. I am glad I picked it up and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

A #graphicnovel based on a true story. In the 1990‘s a writer for Batman The Animated Series was mugged and left for dead. In this book, Batman helps Dini mentally get past this vicious attack 🦇

This is awesome! It's Paul Dini telling his real life journey through the use of a Batman story.

If you are unaware of who Paul Dini is, he is revered as the mastermind behind Batman The Animated series as well as co-creator of Harley Quinn.

He has quite an interesting real life story and the way he tells it in this #GraphicNovel is incredibly gripping. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Also...I freaking love soup! Especially after 30 minutes of shovelling the front walk!

Paul Dini was severely beaten while he was working on Batman and that took its toll and brought up some other ongoing issues. Paul faces these effects through different Batman characters. Brilliant artwork and an awesome, redemptive story.

This graphic novel based on a true incident is absolutely amazing. After the writer is physically and mentally destroyed by a mugging, he is brought down and then brought up by the animated characters he helps create.

I recently reviewed this book on the Z-Trigger podcast. Dini writes a painful autobiographical account of his assault and mugging in the early nineties when working on Batman: The Animated series. The art is as varied and beautiful as it difficult to look at. I'll say little else. It's a journey worth taking.

Very well done. Obviously it's not a traditional Batman story but I'd recommend it to anyone who was a fan of Batman the Animated Series, Tiny Toons and other 90s WB animation. There's also a surprise (at least to me) cameo for Neil Gaiman fans. But I think anyone who has gone through a difficult time and had their own inner Batman and Joker can find something in it. Check out Dini on the Nerdist Podcast from a while back if you can, too. So good.

The author, a writer for the Batman animated series, tells the true story of the physical and emotional toll he suffered following a brutal attack using characters from that world to personify his feelings (some helpful, some destructive). I'm not much of a comic book reader, but this was great.
