A riveting story of discovery, forbidden romance and idealism against all odds, set in a fantasy world inspired in part by Indian history and myth. For fans of Sabaa Tahir and Tomi Adeyemi. In the kingdom of Ambar, girls with star-shaped birthmarks are disappearing. Prophesized to bring the downfall of tyrant King Lohar, the birthmark is the only way to identify the Star Warrior, a girl whose powers will unite the magi and non-magi and bring forth a new era of justice. The king has been arresting the girls to drain them of whatever magic they possess and forcing them into labor camps to live out the rest of their days. Fourteen-year-old Gul, born with a star birthmark, lives in hiding with her parents until one day they too are found. Though her parents are killed, Gul manages to escape and is rescued by a group of rebels. Gul's magic is weak and often unstable; she does not believe in the prophecy about the Star Warrior but she dreams of somehow killing King Lohar, the man responsible for the deaths of her parents. Seventeen-year-old Cavas is a stable boy. Born without magic in his veins, Cavas is degraded and discriminated against. Struggling to keep his ailing father alive in the tenements, Cavas has risked his life countless times by lying and selling information about the palace for a few coins. Brought together by circumstances neither of them expect, Gul and Cavas grow close, discovering a power together that neither of them possess alone. But Ambar Palace has its own secrets, some deadlier than Gul's own. A series of incidents force Gul to reveal her true intentions of entering the palace, an act which will upend their entire world.

This book has been on my TBR for a while so glad I finally read it! It was a really good read with interesting characters and an interesting plot, which is "the chosen one" centered. It really ends on a cliffhanger and maybe I was slightly omged by the reveal. Hopefully I can get to the next book soon! More complete review once I read the sequel ?

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 173.

A "chosen one" fantasy with roots in medieval Indian history & mythology. Toss in an evil regime, a rebel cause, a prophesy, & a forbidden romance and you've got yourself a great YA novel. I picked this up primarily because of the historical setting, which is one I don't know much about, but the story is really good. This is set to come out at the end of June. Fans of Sabaa Tahir and Tomi Adeyemi will enjoy this greatly.

I received some wonderful book mail today from Fierce Reads. An advance copy of one of my most anticipated books of summer, Hunted by the Sky by Tanaz Bhathena. It‘s a YA Fantasy that‘s inspired by medieval India, a time period and place that I‘m not familiar with unfortunately, but I look forward to increasing my world and cultural awareness.
