When his girlfriend takes a job in Thailand, Mischa goes along for the ride, planning only to enjoy himself as much as possible. But when he hears about the suicide of a young woman, Martiya van der Leun, in the Thai prison where she was serving a life sentence for murder, what begins as mild curiosity becomes an obsession. It is clear that Martiya was guilty, but what was it that led her to kill?

Bailedbailed

Well, I am bailing on my March #doublespin without even cracking it open. I think I bought this book many years ago because Stephen King recommended it, but it doesn‘t even remotely sound like a book I would enjoy. I am not even going to feel guilty about letting this one go without giving it a try, @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks It's sadly not unusual for me to pick up a book I bought/received a while ago, read the blurb and think - What the heck was I thinking?! 😂 3y
TheLudicReader @TheAromaofBooks , you always make feel better about my book reading failures! 3y
ShelleyBooksie Good for you! There are too many books in the world to start one that doesn't tempt you. 3y

Mehso-so

I really wanted to like this; it started off riveting and then got bogged down in family genealogical details that stalled the momentum & also lost focus on the MC, which didn‘t pick back up until the last few chapters. The cultural anthropology would have been fascinating had it been non-fiction. 3⭐️ I did finish it.

LauraBrook Great review and too bad it was a little muddled. It sounds interesting! 6y
Tamra @LauraBrook yes, I really typically enjoy cross cultural reads. It wasn‘t bad, but the right word you used is “muddled.” For me anyway. 🙂 6y
LauraBrook @Tamra I enjoy those too, but I think I‘ll give this one a pass. Sounds like it could‘ve been really good if it were two different books instead of smooshed into the one. 6y

Pickpick

I can't remember the last time I was so completely absorbed by a book. Perhaps it was the near magical absence of family and responsibilities, or maybe it was just the perfect blend of writing style and story, regardless this book cast a spell over me. The meandering plot, personal anecdotes which inserted the author as narrator into the next, and the footnotes imitating a scholarly text were all elements that created a mesmerizing tale.

Spiderfelt This book was selected as a finalist for the National Book Award in 2007, ultimately losing to Tree of Smoke by Denis Johnson (a book I gave one star when I tried to read it years ago). It should have won. 7y
Spiderfelt @CherylDeFranceschi you were exactly who I was thinking of as I was reading this book. I'm trying to recall who first brought Mischa Berlinski to my attention. 7y
Spiderfelt For those readers who were disappointed by Euphoria, the ethnographic detail of the fictionalized northern Thailand hill tribe and the anthropologist who studied them was fascinating. 7y

CherylDeFranceschi I haven't read this yet, but after your review, I cannot wait! 7y
Spiderfelt @CherylDeFranceschi I hope the book lives up to my hype. Do you recall which Litten is the scholar of French Caribbean literature? 7y
CherylDeFranceschi Sadly, no. But you may find them if you scroll through the reviews of 7y

This is the book that always comes to mind when asked, "Which book do you wish had gotten more attention?" Fantastic fiction dealing with culture, anthropology, taboos, religion, journalism. #recommendsday

LitHousewife I've had this book on my shelf for a long time. I need to read it. 8y
CarrieKitz @LitHousewife That would make me so happy! 8y
