The Deck of Omens
The Deck of Omens | Christine Lynn Herman

Though the Beast is seemingly subdued for now, a new threat looms in Four Paths: a corruption seeping from the Gray into the forest. And with the other Founders preoccupied by their tangled alliances and fraying relationships, only May Hawthorne seems to realize the danger. But saving the town she loves means seeking aid from the person her family despises most--her and Justin's father. May's father isn't the only newcomer in town--Isaac Sullivan's older brother has also returned, seeking forgiveness for the role he played in Isaac's troubled past. But Isaac isn't ready to let go of his family's history, especially when that history might hold the key that he and Violet Saunders need to destroy the Gray and the monster within it. Harper Carlisle isn't ready to forgive, either. Two devastating betrayals have left her isolated from her family and uncertain who to trust. As the corruption becomes impossible to ignore, Harper must learn to control her newfound powers in order to protect Four Paths. But the only people who can help her do that are the ones who have hurt her the most. With the veil between the Gray and the town growing ever thinner, the Founder descendants must put their grievances with one another aside to stop the corruption and kill the Beast once and for all. But maybe the monster they truly need to slay has never been the Beast...

This didn‘t click as well as the original. To be honest, if it and the first book, The Devouring Gray, were one novel, I‘d probably like it more. The “twist” was obvious (even for YA) and the stakes were assumed to be so high and yet were easily defeated by children. Very Stranger Things, but in a less fun way than the original.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is the sequel to The Devouring Gray. In Fourth Paths it must be saved. The beast has been subdued, however a new danger lurks.
I was so confused about who the characters were and how far in time this takes place from The Devouring Gray. I really should have reread The Devouring Gray before reading this, but it is okay. It was a good read still and I still enjoyed the characters and the stuff they faced. #bookstagram #litsy

Every once in a while I listen to an audio book and am just blown away by the talent of the narrator. There is a song called The Founder's Lullaby that she sings as two different characters together and it sounds amazing. How can someone make their voice sound so different?

Also 2 very cool and different book covers.

In too many instances, the second book in a series doesn‘t live up to the first. I‘m pleased to say that this one mainly hits the mark. I was a little underwhelmed with the endings for some of the characters but overall it was a fitting follow up. 4🌟

The world building filled most of book 1 allowing for focus on character development. With interesting characters like Justin, May, Harper, Gabriel, Violet, Isaac, the Beast, Augusta, the Founders and on and on (take a breath), this book needs the room for the characters. These elements made for a satisfying duology.

This cover is not original. This style was popular when I was a children's librarian. It really makes me think of Grim Legacies, Nine from the Nine Worlds, and a load of others.

But still I find it eye catching.
