Why We're Polarized
Why We're Polarized | Ezra Klein

Americas political system isnt broken. The truth is scarier: its working exactly as designed. In this book, journalist Ezra Klein reveals how that system is polarizing usand how we are polarizing itwith disastrous results. The American political systemwhich includes everyone from voters to journalists to the presidentis full of rational actors making rational decisions given the incentives they face, writes political analyst Ezra Klein. We are a collection of functional parts whose efforts combine into a dysfunctional whole. In Why Were Polarized, Klein reveals the structural and psychological forces behind Americas descent into division and dysfunction. Neither a polemic nor a lament, this book offers a clear framework for understanding everything from Trumps rise to the Democratic Partys leftward shift to the politicization of everyday culture. America is polarized, first and foremost, by identity. Everyone engaged in American politics is engaged, at some level, in identity politics. Over the past fifty years in America, our partisan identities have merged with our racial, religious, geographic, ideological, and cultural identities. These merged identities have attained a weight that is breaking much in our politics and tearing at the bonds that hold this country together. Klein shows how and why American politics polarized around identity in the twentieth century, and what that polarization did to the way we see the world and one another. And he traces the feedback loops between polarized political identities and polarized political institutions that are driving our system toward crisis. This is a revelatory book that will change how you look at politics, and perhaps at yourself.

An examination of the increasingly polarised state of US politics. Klein had some interesting ideas as to how this had arisen, some of which probably also apply to Australian politics. Not so sure about his solutions.
I did find his narration difficult at times - very fast and not a lot of consonants!

Using data, historical trends, current events and past situations, Klein proposes various reasons as to why the US is polarized. I found it to be really interesting, readable and adjusted my thinking about political parties, media, and solutions. Great book and well written!

Ezra Klein is a political writer who looks at history, politics, the social and technological changes in society, and social science research to examine why we‘ve become so polarized. I‘ve read several books along these lines and got a lot out of this one. I don‘t agree with everything he says, and in fact he contradicts himself a couple of times, but if you‘re looking for a greater understanding of our moment, this is a great option.

Klein cogently explains how we‘ve ended up with the current polarized state of American politics. Insights into how each party has changed and role of identity in these changes. Looks at dynamics of power, the set up of our system and the consequences . I learned a lot about why this leads to a cycle of further entrenchment especially when the republicans party can maintain control without winning the popular vote and having outsized power.

Chrissyreadit I was going to add to my TBR but I‘m just going to get it and try to read it. 3y
Chrissyreadit @Blaire how are you handling life? You may have some healthy perspectives I need to hear. I‘m so angry at WV constantly choosing leaders who do not care about them. 3y
Blaire @Chrissyreadit I hope you get a lot out of it. It clarified a lot about the way our system works or more aptly doesn‘t work. 3y

Blaire @Chrissyreadit I‘m worried that wv is not doing enough about covid. The election results were super depressing - makes it hard to stay here. I worry a lot about the impact of a republicans supermajority on things like education and water safety. 3y
Blaire @Chrissyreadit honesty feeling pretty anxious right now. Trying to focus energy where I can help but it is hard. Biden‘s inauguration cannot come soon enough. 3y
Blaire @Chrissyreadit I‘m hopeful that Biden‘s connections with world leaders, his seriousness re the pandemic will help once he can get in there. I wish the transition were being allowed to fully start - that is the most scary part to me. But we‘ll get through it. 3y
Chrissyreadit Sometimes just knowing there are other people who understand the same concerns help. I‘m very grateful to have gotten to know you! 3y

Spending some time with this book. It might not make me feel better about the state of the world, but it might help me understand.

Bette Lately I‘ll see a really compelling sign or ad and then think: one side will agree with that and the other will dig in. It‘s so frustrating. Nobody seeks middle ground. 🤔 4y
PurpleTulipGirl As long as we treat policy and politics as win-lose, compromise will be impossible. Because not getting what you want is losing. It‘s like our political system is straight out of a playground full of toddlers who all need a nap. 4y

Interesting and comprehensively researched but reading it in the middle of the pandemic makes you a) depressed and b) wonder if any of it will really matter.

This is enlightening read. In Klein‘s estimation, polarization itself isn‘t the problem. The problem is polarization combined with our constitutional structure, which was not designed balance and manage partisan interests. All of this seems largely correct to me.

aartichapati I heard Klein describe this on a Vox podcast, sounded great! 4y
