In 1940 the Chinese writer Chiang Yee arrived in Oxford as a refugee from the London Blitz, his lodgings having been bombed. He came to Oxford, he writes, in rather a turmoil. What was meant to be a brief escape turned into a five-year stay, an affectionate relationship with the city, and the fifth in the hugely successful Silent Traveller series. "How many people [...] are ignorant of what they themselves contribute to beauty in their daily lives!"

I love the notion that just by being ourselves and living our lives we're adding to the beauty of the world.

I love the writing of Chiang Yee! A Chinese national who fled the wars in his homeland in the early 1930s, his 'Silent Traveller' books give his observations of life from the viewpoint of a foreigner. His prose is gentle and witty and full of the beauty and joy of nature and people, interspersed with his poems, drawings and paintings. I find Chiang's work really relaxing and uplifting to read. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
